Authors Chuck Frederick and Mike Cochran will speak at The College of St. Scholastica from 11:45 to 12:50 Friday, Feb. 20, in Tower Hall, Room 3410, on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
“We have invited these two men to campus because their books serve as wonderful examples of Duluth's rich sports history," said Ray Gamache, associate professor in St. Scholastica’s Communication, Theatre and Art Department. "We're looking forward to hearing what went into the production of these important sports history books."
Frederick is the author of "Leatherheads of the North: The True Story of Ernie Nevers and the Duluth Eskimos" (2007). He is also the author of “Duluth: The City and the People” (1994) and contributed heavily to two Duluth News Tribune book-length publications: “Aerial Lift Bridge: Spanning a Century” (2005) and “Duluth: Then and Now” (2005). He is also a contributing author of “Grandma's Marathon and Beyond” (2006).
“Leatherheads” tells the story of Nevers and the Eskimos and their notorious exploits on and off the field, from the early years sponsored by Kelley-Duluth Hardware through their storied 1926-1927 barnstorming season and beyond. The book was made into a major motion picture staring George Clooney, Renée Zellweger and John Krasinski.
Frederick is the Duluth News Tribune editorial page editor. A graduate of Winona State University in Winona, MN, he has written for a number of Minnesota newspapers, including the Winona Daily News, the Daily Journal of International Fall and the Duluth News Tribune.
Cochran is the author of “Invincible: History of the Duluth Boat Club” (2008). The book recounts the history of the club from its inception in 1886 until its doors closed in 1926. The book has been nominated for the Minnesota Book Awards and the Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards.
Cochran has been a competitive rower since 1967. He has a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, where he raced in varsity competition and wrote a research manuscript on the history of the Duluth Boat Club, which is the foundation for the book.
