The American Shakespeare Center will perform "The Taming of the Shrew" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Mitchell Auditorium on The College of St. Scholastica campus. The event is part of St. Scholastica's 2007-2008 Mitchell Performing Arts Series.
The play by William Shakespeare is an Elizabethan farce believed to have been written between 1590 and 1594. In the play, the nobleman Petruchio meets and marries Kate, a shrew. Petruchio uses various tactics to bend her to his will.
While many have criticized and condemned the play as sexist, writes artistic director Jim Warren, it is actually "Shakespeare's funniest love story that ends with his happiest couple."
Subplots include the courting of Kate's more conventional sister by multiple suitors, and a plot device in which a drunkard who has been deceived into thinking he's a nobleman watches the play.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and students, and $10 for age 12 and younger. The same prices apply for individual shows in the rest of the Performing Arts Series. For tickets call (218) 723-7000 or (800) 447-5444, ext. 7000, or order online at www.css.edu/mitchell.xml.
The rest of the 2007-2008 Mitchell Performing Arts Series: All performances are at 7:30 p.m.
