The Rose Ensemble, an internationally recognized performance group, will perform a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, in the Mitchell Auditorium on The College of St. Scholastica campus. The public is welcome.
The performance is part of a community forum on religious community and experience sponsored by St. Scholastica's Oreck-Alpern Interreligious Forum, School of Arts and Letters and Department of Music.
After the concert, the performers, along with Tom Crann, host of Minnesota Public Radio's "All Things Considered," will participate in a discussion of the cultural and religious worlds brought to life by this music.
The Rose Ensemble is known for connecting individuals to ancient worlds through vocal music with stories of spirituality and humanity. They honor the musical legacy that has shaped the lives of real people through the ages and across cultures.
Their performance at the Mitchell is titled, "Cantigas from the Land of Three Faiths: Voices of Ancient Mediterranean Christians, Jews & Muslims." The program will echo the rhythms of ancient Mediterranean courts and the solemnity of sacred spaces.
The performance will include a diverse collection of Arab-Andalusian dances, Sephardic laments, Spanish "villancicos," Hebrew chants and Galician spiritual "cantigas."
The College of St. Scholastica is regularly recognized as one of the finest colleges in the Midwest. The 2010 "America's Best Colleges" survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks St. Scholastica in the top tier of Midwestern universities. The Washington Post has rated St. Scholastica as one of the nation's 100 "hidden gems" among U.S. colleges and universities.
