"Proof" is the next performance in The College of St. Scholastica's 2008-2009 theater season. The play begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, in the St. Scholastica Theatre on campus.
Other performances will be at 7:30 p.m. April 18, 23, 24, and 25, as well as at 2 p.m. April 26. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for senior citizens and non-St. Scholastica students (with identification), and $5 for St. Scholastica students.
"Proof" was written by David Auburn and won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play. It follows a young woman as she reflects on her life with her recently deceased father. She hopes she has inherited his genius for math, but fears she has also inherited his madness as she tries to prove the authorship of a paradigm-shifting mathematical proof.
"At its heart, "Proof" is a story of personal relationships during a period of familial stress," said director Tony Barrett, professor of management at St. Scholastica. "The challenge for the actors is to communicate the emotional baggage from the past as it influences the present."
The film was made into the 2005 movie of the same name and featured Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal.
