The College of St. Scholastica's men's and women's cross country teams will help two Duluth grade schools get ready for the new school year on Monday, Aug. 31.
About 55 St. Scholastica athletes, plus managers and coaches, will do volunteer work from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at these schools:
St. James Catholic School, 715 N. 57th Ave. W., Duluth; 20 student-athletes plus a coach. The principal is Bill Van Loh, (218) 624-1511.
Lakeview Christian Academy, 155 W. Central Entrance; 35 student-athletes plus two coaches. The administrator is Todd Benson, (218) 723-8844.
The schools will provide lunch for the athletes at noon. St. Scholastica students will paint, sweep, clean rooms, organize files, move books, wash windows, move equipment and do playground/outside work.
The teams' community service project is in its tenth year. In the past, the teams went to St. John's and Covenant Park Bible Camp to help with whatever was needed.
The men's and women's cross country teams begin their 32nd season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Northland College Invitational meet in Ashland, WI. Their first home meet is at the UMD Invitational on Saturday, Sept.12. After the meet, alumni, team members and their families will attend a picnic on the Science Front Lawn on the St. Scholastica campus.
