The College of St. Scholastica Concert and Jazz Bands will stage a free spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Mitchell Auditorium on campus. The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. A reception will follow in the Mitchell lobby.
Both bands are under the direction of Marianne Connelly, assistant professor of music at St. Scholastica.
The Concert Band will open with a brilliant fanfare piece, "Hey," by Timothy Mahr, a former Duluth resident. It will be followed by a peaceful, meditative Benedictine Chant, "Sing My Tongue, Alleluia" by John Zdechlik. The piece begins quietly and then is transformed into mixed meters and exciting treatments.
Kaitlyn Tillman, a junior music education major, will be featured on alto saxophone in "Persuasion" by Sammy Nestico. The band will continue with the powerful and beautiful "Ross Roy" by Netherlands composer Jacob de Haan. The piece will feature sophomore Dillon Sterle on English horn.
"The Chimes of Liberty" march by Franco Edwin Goldman will complete the Concert Band program with staff member Pamela Christensen on chimes and freshman Sarah Ensign on piccolo.
The Jazz Band offers a tribute to Glenn Miller with a medley of "American Patrol," "String of Pearls" and "Chatanooga Choo Choo." The band will take you away with the Latin feel of "Spain" by Chick Corea and the laid back feel of a Count Basie chart, "Splanky," by Sammy Nestico.
Senior Benjamin Greenwald, guitarist vocalist and composer, will arrange his tune "Pushing my Luck" for a small jazz combo from the group. Vocalist Preston Gunderson, a freshman, will be featured on the popular classic jazz tune "They Can't Take That Away From Me."
"That tune reminds us that no matter what is happening on Wall Street we can hold on to the sweet thoughts of our special someone," said Connelly.
