Dr. Igor Krasnov, a visiting Russian Fulbright Scholar, will give a talk entitled "Multiculturalism in the USA and Russia: The Battle of Diversity and Unity" at 3:40 p.m. Friday, May 1, in room 4119 of Tower Hall on The College of St. Scholastica campus. The public is welcome to this free event; refreshments will be served.
Krasnov teaches at the Karelian State Pedagogical University in Petrozavodsk, Russia, the Sister City of Duluth. In his talk, he will share some findings and thoughts on a variety of multicultural issues faced by both the US and Russia.
Krasnov will compare situations with multicultural education in America (as pioneers of this phenomenon, he says) and Russia, which finds itself today in the same situation as the US was in some 20 years ago.
Among other topics, Krasnov will touch on diversity and unity, bilingual education, political correctness, ethnocentrism, and religious education as the basis for cultural comparisons of these educational systems.
The talk is part of a faculty colloquium series developed last year by the College's School of Arts and Letters to highlight diverse faculty research projects. The presentation will last one hour and include a 40-minute lecture followed by 20 minutes of questions and answers.
