Alworth Center for Peace and Justice Lecture Series

Future of Capitalism

The 2009-2010 Alworth Peace & Justice Lecture Series will focus on the systemic and moral
foundations of our economic and financial system.

Some argue that - despite the current global financial crisis - the free enterprise system as we know it still represents the best hope for growth, prosperity and social justice. Others are calling for reform and a reexamination of how we manage resources, development and economic justice.

The Future of Capitalism Speaker Profiles

Marjorie Kelly

"Democracy and The Corporation"
Marjorie Kelly

Kelly is expected to argue that focusing on making profits for stockholders to the exclusion of everyone else's interest is a form of discrimination based on property or wealth. KellyShe is the cofounder and publisher of Business Ethics, a national publication on corporate social responsibility.

Michael Cox

"We're Better Off Than We Think"
W. Michael Cox

In his book Cox looks at multiple dimensions -- consumption and wealth, safety and security, leisure time and recreation, working conditions, variety and choice and more -- and contends that we've never been better off than today. He is Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank in Dallas.

Bill McKibben

"The Wealth of Communities"
Robet McKibben

McKibben makes the case for moving beyond "growth" as the paramount economic ideal and pursing prosperity in a more local direction, with regions producing more of their own food, generating more of their own energy and even creating more of their own culture and entertainment.
