Saints Read: "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"
Each year, the freshmen Dignitas committee chooses a book to read as part of the common experience for first year students. In honor of our Centennial year, we are inviting our entire community to join this reading experience as part of a Centennial Saints Read program.
The Dignitas committee selected Rebecca Skloot's book, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." There are many reasons this book was chosen, including:
Its exploration of issues in medical ethics as well as race relations and justice in the U.S. , themes that woven into the curriculum at St. Scholastica.
The book's inclusion in Duluth's "Community Read" program, sponsored by the Duluth Public Library. The book is also being used as part of community reading programs throughout the Arrowhead region.
The book has garnered worldwide attention and has spent more than 30 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" will be discussed at upcoming community events and Skloot will be featured as our Centennial keynote speaker.
